Combined Heat and Power: Creating Efficiency through Design & Operation

Course Length: 3 hours

This course focuses on the successful implementation and operation of a cogeneration (CHP) plant.  The presentation progresses from design through construction and operations, and concludes with three case studies.

The design portion includes key issues that affect equipment sizes and selections, as well as the effects of those selections on plant performance and heat recovery.  Heat recovery options are then discussed, followed by the design considerations of each system in the cogeneration plant, including: fuel, combustion air, exhaust, emission controls, and electrical. The design portion concludes with the many aspects of obtaining a construction permit.

The construction portion provides an overview of the key steps in a project’s construction phase that differ from more typical central plant or general construction projects. Then the key steps necessary to obtain an operating permit are discussed.

The operations portion shows the methods that should be implemented to prolong equipment life and promote operational efficiency.  Operational metrics are provided that can be used to monitor plant performance and help sustain operational efficiency.

The three “real-world” case studies are from different market segments. Each case study provides background information for the facility and the corresponding results of the combined heat and power plant installation.
