Paul Pieper is the director of Applied Products at The Master Group, an independent distributor of air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilation systems in Eastern Canada. Pieper holds a degree in Pure and Applied Science from Marianopolis College; a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the Department of Building, Civil & Environmental Engineering; and a certificate in Software Development from Concordia University. He is also a member of the Quebec Order of Professional Engineers.

Pieper has spent a large portion of his career working with manufacturers of HVAC equipment and products and has held roles in applications, engineering, marketing, product management, and product development. Over the years, he has developed an in-depth knowledge of a variety of systems and equipment, ranging from basic air-handling units to specialty refrigeration and high-end dehumidification systems.

Throughout his career, Pieper has been deeply involved with air-to-air energy recovery technologies. He has participated with AHRI on the air-to-air energy recovery product sections for several manufacturers and was part of the U.S. delegation that helped produce ISO 16494:2014, Heat recovery ventilators and energy recovery ventilators—Method of test for performance.

Pieper has contributed to the ASHRAE Handbooks, served as peer reviewer, and has been Chair of both ASHRAE TC 8.12, Desiccant Dehumidification Equipment and Components, and ASHRAE TC 5.5, Air-to-Air Energy Recovery. In addition, he was on the Project Monitoring Sub-committee for the ASHRAE Design Guide for Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems and has been Distinguished Lecturer for ASHRAE. He routinely presents at ASHRAE Winter and Annual Conferences. Pieper is currently active on SPC 84, Method of Testing Air-to-Air Heat/Energy Exchangers, and as an instructor for the ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI). He has developed two short courses relating to air-to-air energy recovery: Air-to-Air Energy Recovery Fundamentals and Air-to-Air Energy Recovery Applications—Best Practices, which are part of the Energy Savings Practices Career Enhancement Curriculum. These courses were also chosen to be included in the inaugural training session for the Global Training Center in Dubai.
